Amethyst. With it’s beautiful purple hues and vast array of emotional, spiritual and physical benefits, it’s one of our primary ‘go to’ crystals every time. The name Amethyst derives from the Greek word ametusthos, meaning “not intoxicated,” and comes from an ancient legend. It is said that the wine god Bacchus, angry over an insult and determined to avenge himself decided the first person he should meet would be devoured by his tigers. The poor unfortunate mortal happened to be a beautiful maiden named Amethyst. As the ferocious tigers sprang into action, she sought the protection of the goddess and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Swept with regret and guilt following his cruel actions, Bacchuspoured the juice of ripe grapes over the stone as an offering, giving the gem its lovely purple hue.
Amethyst is renowned as being a powerful healer. It is said Amethyst is one of the most effective crystals for healing, and not just people, but also animals and plants. It is said to counteract negative energies, both in the aura and places and spaces. A very effective stone for healers and light workers as it protects against psychic attack, or those with ill-wishes, returning the energy back to the universe after being transformed into positive, loving energy.
A fabulous stone to promote deep relaxation, calmness and serentity. Often referred to as “nature’s tranquiliser,” it can be placed under the pillow or on a bedside table to aid sleep and is especially effective for easing recurring nightmares in children. Amethyst is especially supportive of the emotional body, bringing those who are overworked, overstressed, or overwhelmed back to center. It eases the mental anxieties that lead to physical tension and emotional unease.
As Amethyst is a stone of spiritual protection and purification, it is a very effective stone to cleans the energy field of negative influences and energies. It effectively creates a shield of spiritual light around the body, acting as a shield or barrier against lower energies and unhealthy environments. It is a valuable stone to call upon when part-taking in psychic or intuitive work.
