Amethyst. With it’s beautiful purple hues and vast array of emotional, spiritual and physical benefits, it’s one of our primary ‘go to’ crystals every time. The name Amethyst derives from the Greek word ametusthos, meaning “not intoxicated,” and comes from an ancient legend. It is said that the wine god Bacchus, angry over an insult and determined to avenge himself decided the first person he should meet would be devoured by his tigers. The poor unfortunate mortal happened to be a beautiful maiden named Amethyst. As the ferocious tigers sprang into action, she sought the protection of the goddess and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Swept with regret and guilt following his cruel actions, Bacchuspoured the juice of ripe grapes over the stone as an offering, giving the gem its lovely purple hue.
